Folding Proteins

No security topic today, this is a personal blog item.

Since 2001 I run Seti@Home which is a distributed computer program searching for alien life forms. Today I found out there is Rosetta@Home. Rosetta is also a distributed computer program which is folding proteins. They do this to calculate the lowest energy levels of folding proteins to find structure for new cures against most life threatening diseases. This is very noble work, the program runs in your idle computer processor time and really runs unobtrusive in the background. Always wanted to help humanity? maybe this is the thing for you. The big irony of it is: One day this program could save your life or someone close to you, and maybe your computer has found a cure for it.

What I know of it is that it takes 30 single home computer processor years to calculate all folding points from a single protein. Note: a protein in the human body will fold itself in under 1 nanosecond! that is super fast. Isn't it really amazing how the human body works? So you can understand that they really need your help.
