HackerSafe VP Brett Oliphant deserves a cock punch.
If you do not understand what I am all worked up about here, read my previous
article first. I have re-written parts of this article, because new material has come to light. How much I despise the HackerSafe methodology of approaching security scanning, this story is far more surreal than anyone could have thought. Meet the security con-artist that fooled ScanAlert, McAfee, his brother and 8 woman he dated with.
Brett Oliphant -
read: widely recognized security expert, who no-one ever heard about- and the VP of ScanAlert is probably going to jail. To be honest, it's just the thing many waited for.
He has been found guilty of numerous fraudulent acts and can face jail time. All the charges are connected with the Oliphant brothers' actions between Nov. 1, 2004, and Aug. 31, 2005, running companies called 85 West, LLC, and Electronic Scrap Recycling Corp. Both lived in the area at the time, according to court documents. Brett Oliphant used the money to pay for his rent, clothing, flowers (to impress 8 ladies) and a vehicle, according to Haskins. In all the Brett took in more than $1.1 million from the illegal sales, though he returned $350,000 to two "investors" who got suspicious, according to Haskins. They also gave people fake investment documents, the investigator wrote in her affidavit.
And guess what, I think McAfee got hoaxed as well when they bought HackerSafe for $51M.
update: I got an e-mail from someone that knew the brothers, and Brett also seem to have tricked his brother Bryan into his little fraud schemes. I do not know if it is true, but there you have it: Journalism is about finding the truth, not sensation.
update: Here is more info on Brett if you are interested in a little extra drama that seems to surrounds this curious fellow, reportedly he dated 8 woman at the same time and scammed them all:
