I know this would be a good title or description for a science fiction book, or a book by Tom Clancy: the award winning political thriller writer. But actually this is far from fiction, Germany has passed a law that is going to cripple the security industry in Germany.

It is not allowed to own scanners, tools or other security equipment that can be used to commit a crime. This is really bad people because it sets the clock 20 years back in time, and making it a crime instead of an intellectual leisure, independent scholarship, or even a personal passion for security. The reason why this cripples everything is because blackhats will continue anyway, what they do is already illegal they won't be hurt because they can't be located anyway. The ones who are going to be hurt are the researchers who are trying to help and raise awareness about information security, and those who advocate a vigilant way of dealing with the Internet, freedom of information, for which people went to prison.

A hungry mind is a crime again.
