The Merriam Webster dictionary describes security as:
se·cu·ri·ty
1: the quality or state of being secure: as a: freedom from danger : safety b: freedom from fear or anxiety.
As with all words in language, they are very restrictive. Misunderstanding is a language problem, a discussion is also a language problem due to the lack of proper distinction between what we really mean, and what we try to say. For this reason, it results in a flawed system, because we can never ever truly say what we mean. Hence, the endless discussions all over the Internet and on your television, and the reason why we can never come to a good consensus about any topic. The reason why we can't go together through one door, is because of subtle differences.
Explaining yourself is different from expressing yourself. Ex-plain and Ex-press: plaining out, and pressing out. plaining means to lay out something in such a way that someone can understand it, in a logical sense. pressing out, deals with emotions. As the word itself, you press it out without any logical theory. Emotions are often biased, or induced by fear. Emotion can be good counselor, but when it comes to serious issues and to explaining it, you'll need to use logic. But when you only utilize one of them, you'll miss the big picture.
What security does to emotion.
Security, the quality of state of being secure isn't complete. As you probably understand and as I explain, nothing can be made secure. But, this doesn't mean we should lock ourselves up and never see the light of day again. Thus, we can express ourselves by saying that we are secure, while we probably never will be. But the meaning of security is to obtain a state and quality of being secure. Quality means emotion, quality is expression, not a system nor a process.
Securing, needs to be the act to diminishing potential dangers. Not all dangers, but those to a reasonable level in which we can perform without looking over our shoulder every two seconds. This can be reached through logic, because that is possible. Logic can help us to understand and control our emotions. No one will be served with constant fear, immediate threats should be mitigated, or prevented in order to raise quality of being secure.
A threat and a cloud.
To me, a threat is a threat. Whether it be small or huge, it still is a risk. But we must stay reasonable, and so we usually down play the smaller threats, because we can't deal with all of them in a daily basis. But a small threat can become a big threat in different ways. many small threats can accumulate to a big one. The reason why many don't feel this way is because of the way our brains function. Brains are lazy, they have for many tasks processes that are so to speak delegated to the automatic pilot. A brain cannot process all that reality throws at us on a daily basis. There is too much information beaming on our senses. One special feature of the brain, is that it has a kind of method to quickly see patterns or connections in things that aren't really there. Like seeing a face in the clouds, the pattern is there, but the image is generated by the brain. it makes a conclusion, without being exact.
A cloud is a cloud, not a face. Even a cloud isn't a cloud, but tiny water drops, and so on and on. The brains rationalizes, and narrows it down to metaphors since it cannot see the water drops, only the accumulation of it. And so it seems a big object, instead of millions of watter drops with air between them. Brains generalize, and they have to. Anyone who generalizes is generally wrong, to come to a better picture we have to think it through. Thinking is difficult, it is also painstaking because it requires bit-by-bit analysis. Theoretically we can never come to a complete conclusion, because we can't take in all variables. This is also generalizing, and I am willing to say that science is basically a generalized way of looking at reality by only determining it symptoms. When a cloud becomes too heavy, it will rain. But, the term cloud is generalized. Strictly you could better say: when a raindrop's cohesion changes, it will fall to earth. In this manner, a cloud doesn't exist. This can be narrowed to to the smallest particle, or string -depends where you stand- and you will notice that what we call real, isn't real at all.
The cloud can be analogues to a threat, seeing all small threats, and you understand that any drop could fall, but the sum of these tiny drops, can predict a thunderstorm. It all depends where you stand, and how deep you are wiling to go. So we don't do that, we generalize, otherwise people think we are nuts, since they don't do that either. Humans are good at carelessness. In nature this is a death sin. An animal who isn't cautious will fall victim to it's predator. So an animal must be cautious, to stay alive. Will it increase his comfort being paranoia all the time? no not at all. In nature there is no room for mistakes. The same is true in our security, if we want to be secure we must be cautious in our waking hours. When you try to live like that, you will go insane. You won't make it 5 days living in constant fear, it is waring you down. In our society we do not have to fear much natural predators. There aren't many. This gives us comfort, but at the same it leads to carelessness when this is being practiced to it's extremities.
Nature's way of Hacking.
Most surfers who go online, don't think about security. They want to have a good time, laugh, and read all the things they are interested in. If they should care, they would be more secure, and probably would never fall for a phishing scam. In Nature, phishing is everyday practice by many living organisms. Flowers phish bees, females are phishing males -and you thought otherwise didn't you?- and a predator will phish it's prey. And the gross falls for it, because that is their role in Nature. It is predestination, a prey is born to be a prey. A predator is born to predate it's prey. The prey only exist because of it's predator, and vice-versa. And because a predator must have multiple preys, the victims are always in the majority. Not everyone's role is being a predator. It is a necessity.
And so we will never able to secure other people, they have to secure them self. And we know that they can't. Basically you can say that it is their role. If everyone was a hacker, the fun would stop. When a potential victim arises, a hacker will stand up, to even it out.
And that is one of the biggest generalizations I can make, but still a comfortable one, if one accepts it's place in the system, and not trying to force it in a good nor a bad way but to let it cycle, like it always cycled.
